Green Gifting

I have been thinking for some time now about an alternative to paper wrappings for gifts. With Christmas around the corner, I have been experimenting with some ideas for alternatives.

I have scads of fabric samples and remnants that need a purpose, so I picked one off the pile and went to work.

Here is what I came up with. I think I will make more of these. They only cost me pennies to make...as all of the supplies are things that I already have on hand. I searched for fabric gift bags on the internet and only found plain fabric bags....nothing fancy, nothing gussied-up!

This bag is made from a sample of designer silk. I printed a vintage postcard onto fabric, appliqued it, and added embellishments. A ribbon drawstring keeps it peek-proof. This bag is large enough for a large piece of clothing (or two).

Fabric bags are great ideas. Our family has been using/making them for several years. They keep getting passed around depending on the gift. I don't have any the right size, I make more. Works great. And like you say, we don't waste paper.

So when do I send you my "What I want from Bev, for Christmas" gift wish list to be wrapped in those sweet lil bags of yours? LOL!

That's a great idea. I might have to rummage through my fabric stash to see what could be used for some bags.

Wow, I thought I was in the wrong blog, sorry, I just didn't know you had it in you....sorry lol. I knew you were the apron queen but this... Adorable, now you have got me thinking. I have made some before but not with the pics, love that! Can you print on any plain fabric?
There are so many talented sides to you!

I had a couple bolts of a whimsical christmas kitty print that I needed to use up, so one Christmas everyone got their gifts in big bags with handles using the 2 kitty prints I had. They oddly had a charcoal background so weren't terribly "holiday" looking, and I got many comments back on how they are now used as shopping bags, so it turned out they did double-duty.
Excellent idea for you to do and they don't get thrown out like wrapping paper. :)

Pretty neat idea!

I did something similar once but the lazy gal's way. I just put the gift (wrapped in tissue paper) in the middle of a square scarf then brought the corners up and secured it with a ribbon...like a little hobo knapsack. But your ideas is MUCH nicer!!!!

That's really cute. They can use it again to pass along another gift or use it to store something in.

I'm glad someone is sewing!! :0)

Hugs, Steph

Absolutely beautiful, I've made cloth bags for wrapping, but never anything near that elegant. You could just give them with nothing inside...
