Working Towards Our Goal

Goal for 2009: To become as self-sufficient as possible. Moving to the farm is a major step towards attaining this goal. Little by little, I am trying to move away from the need for a supermarket. Making yogurt is another step in that direction. I tried making my first batch last night.....so very easy.....and it was a success!
What a simple process: milk heated to boiling, cooled to lukewarm, cultures added, jars place in yogurt maker. Four hours later: fresh homemade yogurt....ready to be flavored with whatever is on hand. I suppose we might add some of my homemade blueberry/lime preserves. By the time the year is over we will be growing and preserving our own fruits, vegetables, chicken, eggs, and honey. We are planning to grow lettuces year round under grow lights, bake our own bread, make yogurt, grow sprouts. Self-sufficiency is a bit of work...but highly rewarding, and so much more healthy!

It is a lot more work-but you sure do fall asleep easier, huh?
I wish I had maintained more of that but life got hectic..illnesses and such and we let go of some of the labor intensive things ..just to get by and getting them back AT 50 & 56 is much harder. Still we're heading in that direction...ever so slowly.
Tks for a nudge every so often to keep it up! Makes the journey easier!

ABSOLUTELY!! I'm right with you! Not having to go to a job "outside" the home really focuses your attention to the things that were a part of daily life for our grandmothers. Taking care of a home the "old fashioned" way was WORK! (But it sure tastes better) I've got recipes for yogurt that don't require a yogurt maker in case you're interested. ;)

Hi Beverly, boy are you the little "earth Momma", that is what my friend used to call us when we did all the home made things just like you are doing. That is so great, I remember doing sprouts, baking bread, making yogurt, I even tried cheese, it wasn't horrible. We canned, dryed food, and made fruit leathers, it was a fun time, enjoy your wonderful farm life. I would love to move to the country again, but now is not the time. Take care.TTFN

They look great and I admire your plans. I've told my husband that I want a garden this year, but he has got to be willing to do more than just throw a bunch of seed out in a well turned ground. I raised beds so these old bones can work it better.

Have you ever hear of maryjanesfarm? I might have found your site through her's, I'm not sure, but I bet you would enjoy her story.

I am trying to work toward being more self-sufficient. Little by little I make more things at home and buy less.
